Healing with aromatic essences has been practiced and documented for more than four thousand years.  The term Aromatherapy was given to the ‘modern’ practice of using essential oil for medicinal purposes during World War I by chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse.¹ After 1980, Aromatherapy was practiced in four basic categories: medical aromatherapy, popular and esoteric aromatherapy, holistic aromatherapy and the scientific study of fragrance.²

More recently in the United States there seems to have been a resurgence of interest in aromatherapy for medicinal purposes.  Health food stores have assisted and encouraged us to make better food choices and given us access to a more natural medicine cabinet to dabble in without the restrictions or standards adhered to by other countries.

Essential oils are used in a large number of products that we use everyday.  They spice up processed foods.  They give detergents, soap, candles, air fresheners and thousands of other personal care products distinct aromas.  Aroma is not just for the perfume and cosmetic industries anymore. 

About fifty years ago, Marguerite Maury, a French biochemist and beautician published The Secret of Life and Youth which help create a holistic approach to Aromatherapy. In that volume she emphasized the benefits of applying diluted essential oils externally in combination with massage.  Then in 1977 Robert Tisserand published the Art of Aromatherapy.  Maury and Tisserand helped to shift the purely medical approach that had been adhered to, especially in France where as early as 1800 it was realized that some essential oils were highly antimicrobial and had been used for those purposes successfully.³ 

In Europe, Asia and Australia, essential oils are recognized for their medicinal importance and have stringent standards.  Research, labeling as well as dispensing regulations comparable to our pharmaceuticals are strongly adhered to.  Only professional health care givers such as:  nurses (Britain), and trained, licensed Aromatherapists (Germany and Australia) may administer medicinal-grade essential oils.  In certain areas they are used extensively in hospitals, and even covered by insurance. Even in the United States, some hospitals, hospices and nursing homes have found that using therapeutic-grade essential oils yield positive results for patients and staff.

While the future direction of Aromatherapy is as uncertain as its past, it is clear that it will not be acknowledged by many in conventional medicine without verifiable scientifically based research. There are several obstacles that are recognized in obtaining this sort of data⁴:

• Complexity, source, personality of each essential oil including ecological variables such as genetics, chemotypes, harvesting time, extraction processes, type and age of plant and quality control measures
• Administration of essential oils;
• Modification of oils such as degradation, adulteration, rectification, and natural versus synthetic and;
• The Aromatherapist’s role.⁵
