Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine with Elizabeth Reedy, LAc

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the broad term for the ways to identify patterns of disease, using the pulse, tongue, eyes, palpation and other techniques. This system of medicine has been around for 2500 years and allowed practitioners to understand what was going on inside a patient's body before the use of X-rays, MRI's and CT scans.

Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners are trained in:

  • Acupuncture - very fine (usually painless) needles placed on acupuncture points on the body

  • Chinese herbs - a variety of plants, animals or minerals combined into formulas in the form of pills, tablets, tinctures or powders

  • Cupping - the use of glass, plastic or silicone cups suctioned to the skin to improve circulation in the area while relaxing muscle tension

  • Moxabustion - a Chinese herb burned on a needle or around the skin to warm the area

  • Gua sha - a gentle scraping technique to help release muscle tension or resolve exterior conditions such as a cold or allergies

  • Ear Magnets - tiny magnets attached to an adhesive material and placed on acupuncture points in the ear
