Doula Training

Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) Labor Doula Training

This two-day workshop is the first step toward becoming a CAPPA Certified Labor Doula (CLD). It's 18 hours of everything birth! We will explore the do's and don'ts, the hows and whys of providing support to laboring women and their partners, discuss what it is like to be IN labor and AT labor, delve into benefits and risks of inductions and other routine interventions, and learn the ins and outs of running a successful doula practice. We will learn a lot, we will laugh a lot and we will make connections with colleagues who will become a support system for you as you begin your work as a birth professional. You will receive the CAPPA Labor Doula Manual, required for completion of your certification, and you will learn:

  • Practical application of Scope of Practice, ethics and integrity

  • Building bridges with medical/midwifery professionals

  • Modeling and teaching positive communication and self-advocacy

  • Debbie Hull's unique approach to the stages of labor, exploring what it is like to be IN and AT labor

  • Support for every stage and birth

  • Hands-on practice of proven comfort measures and labor support techniques

  • Emotional support for labor and birth, as well as unexpected events

  • Hospital procedures - risk/benefit, as well as alternatives and support

  • Cesarean and VBAC support

  • Prenatal and postpartum consultations and support

  • Tips for supporting initial breastfeeding

  • Business development, marketing and networking to create a successful career

You will leave prepared to begin working as a doula, trained, skilled and with a support network of professional doulas to back you up and support you.

About the instructor

Debbie Hull, BS, CCE, CLD, CCCE Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator Faculty, has been serving expectant Houston families for over 22 years. She is one of the most sought-after doulas and childbirth educators in the city, as well as a community advocate for natural birth and the rights of birthing women and their families. Her work has been published in the BirthWorks Newsletter, Special Delivery (publication of the association of Labor Assistant and Childbirth Educators), The Clarion (publication of the International Cesarean Awareness Network) and CAPPA Connection. She holds dual-certifications as a Childbirth Educator (BirthWorks International and CAPPA) and has designed and developed a unique (and fun!) curriculum for childbirth classes to equip couples with the language and tools they need to prepare for their births in the hospital, at home or in a birth center. It is a great source of pride to her that many local midwives make their classes a requirement for their clients. Debbie is certified as a Labor Doula by CAPPA, and is thrilled to have joined CAPPA Faculty as both a Labor Doula Trainer and Childbirth Educator Trainer, training the next generation of professional birthworkers. Debbie has a long association and former leadership with the International Cesarean Awareness Network, is a frequent guest and host on KPFT radio's Whole Mother (90.1FM, Sundays, 7:30pm; listen to archived shows at www.wholemothershow.com and shows Debbie hosted on her site), and she portrayed Jillian in each of the Houston productions of Karen Brody's play, Birth. Her most loved role is being mother to her fabulous, formerly breastfed and homeschooled son and daughter. www.debbiehulldoula.com
