For the past 18 years the natural products industry has dedicated one day each year to unite in Washington DC in order to educate and inform lawmakers about the essential role natural products provide. Their goal is to remind these influential policy makers that natural products help Americans stay healthy and that preventative care is extremely beneficial for its citizens.
The National Products Association is a strong lobby throughout the year, but hosts this day-long advocacy conference to provide retailers, suppliers, and all industry stakeholders from across the country the opportunity to become lobbyists for a day. This year National Products Day is Tuesday, April 12th.
Why is this important? Every year special interest groups lobby Congress to put more and more laws in effect that are sometimes designed to benefit the consumer with things like requiring labels that are informative, banning dangerous ingredients, requiring better information and clearer manufacturing guidelines. At other times special interest groups have approached Congress and state legislatures to ban supplements altogether or make them only available behind the counter. These things are happening every day in the nation’s capital and in our state capitals.
Natural products are a multi-billion dollar business, a fact in itself that is telling of just how much Americans have come to depend on this industry for preventive care. The National Products Association serves to protect the consumer by requiring higher standards for natural products while lobbying policy makers to make good and fair standards and laws for this important industry and argue against those who would legislate it out of existence.
